WATERFLOOD

STARTING FIRST OF ITS KIND WATERFLOOD IN THE EAST SJV BASIN OF KERN COUNTY

A typical inverted 5-spot pilot waterflood had laid the groundwork for full field development in a formation that was overlooked by the major oil company that discovered the field. However, the expansion plans had to be reimagined when horizontal wells were tested in that zone which intercepted the waterflood. What ultimately resulted was a unique waterflood with vertical injector wells and horizontal producing wells. A rigorous surveillance and pressure monitoring plan had to be created to ensure high sweep efficiency and identify water breakthrough. In the later years of the project, a well engineered conformance plan was implemented that has resulted in a fairly minimal decline in that waterflood over past 3 years.
